Beautiful Basement Bathroom |
|
In a brief moment of madness, we decided to add a bathroom remodeling project to
our kitchen remodeling project. Our thinking was that it would be less
disruptive to do it all at once. Now that it is done, I am glad we tackled the
whole project. During the project I was not as convinced it was a good idea.
Having to live in almost exclusively in your bedroom drives you a bit crazy. Our
entire basement and first floor were a disaster for months. This is our second full bathroom and it is much larger than our main bath upstairs. For a basement bathroom, it is actually quite bright and pleasant. We are very happy with how it turned out. |
Bathtub
Our previous house had a deep spa tub. Richard has been mourning the loss of a big tub ever since we moved to our current house. Contrary to typical expectations, Richard is the one who really loves to take baths! We chose to add a period appropriate cast-iron dual tub with a wall mount faucet instead of a fiberglass modern spa tub. It is nice to be able to sit in a bath up to our chins again! |
Tile Floor
While the tub is Richard's favorite part of the bathroom, the floor is mine. I have always loved patterned tile floors. I used the American Olean site to try out different designs with their matte hex and square tiles It was hard to reign myself in to keep to budget and to remain period appropriate. In the end, we used very inexpensive tiles and put in a small design for a very reasonable price. I am extremely pleased with how it looks and how well it coordinates with the design on the wall backsplash. |
Vanity
We departed from period-appropriate style somewhat by having a sink vanity instead of a pedestal sink. Since the room for the bathroom was quite large, I was willing to do this since the pedestal would've had to be quite large to be in scale. We investigated large porcelain pedestal sinks and decided that we could better afford a vanity with a simple "shaker" style and a marble counter top. In addition to being better in scale with the larger bathroom, it has many times more storage than our more period appropriate upstairs bath. |
Hutch
We had a custom hutch built to match the vanity we had put in. These are also cabinets from Canyon Creek Cabinets. They are a locally owned cabinet manufacturer who did both our kitchen and bath cabinetry. We are quite happy with the results. It is so nice to have more storage than we know what to do with. Typically we fight with the opposite problem so it is refreshing. You can see that the room has reasonable light despite being in a basement. It has two windows so it avoids that dank "basement" feeling. |
