Like many residents of North Seattle, I live in an old house. I really do love it, single-pane windows and all. A couple of years ago my husband and I acquired our brick Tudor and are busy planning (and finally implementing) our restoration and renovation projects. Our first house, though lovely, had been thoroughly remodeled over the years, so many of the original details were lost. So, we remodeled it. Our contractor did add period-appropriate details where necessary and it turned out very well. When we started to hunt for our second house, we made efforts to find a house with more of the original details intact. This time around we intended to restore our house and maintain its existing beauty and character. Recent Remodeling ProjectsAfter several years of mulling over the necessary changes, we recently took the plunge on a couple of major remodeling projects. We did a full basement remodel on our previous house, which taught us a lot about how to work with contractors successfully. Thus, this time we went in prepared and did a major kitchen and bath remodeling project. It was terrifically frustrating but the end results are worth it. Historical House PhotosIf you have an old house, you can get historical house photos from the assessor. These are a lovely item to frame. It is also very interesting to see how your house has changed over the years. To get historical house photos from prior to 1973, you have to contact the Washington State Archives for the Puget Sound region. You will need your parcel number for the property, which you can look up with the nifty online parcel locator. Preservation and Period Details
